The Picks

I am going to finally weigh in on this week's NFL chamionship game. Two overriding points, and then the picks:
1. The Bears are a sham. As I mentioned, even when the Bears were good, they were really not that good.
2. Teams of destiny don't exist. They are as mythical as unicorns and women presidents.

With those points in mind, I have to take the Patriots and the Saints. Both road teams which is a bit of a surprise. How do the colts go from not being able to get out of the first round to not being able to lose? The short answer is that they don't. If their offense continues to not score touchdowns they will get beat handily today. Watching the Colts defensive resurgence has reminded me why the Pats always seem to beat them in big games. As explained during the Ravens game, the Colts play deep and let you catch underneath them then come up and stop you, which put another way is like saying, Brady, why don't we give your receivers seven yards a catch and see if you are patient enough to beat us. The answer repeatedly is that the Pats are patient enough, and that their offensive scheme is perfectly suited to the Colts defense. If you think turf is going to be an issue, think back to the Monday night game when they pummeled the Vikings by passing like 90 times. The one thing that frightens me a bit is that the Colts know the Pats, they have played so often and they finally get them at home, which is sort of like Green Bay finally getting past Dallas, the difference though is coaching. Why don't we hear more about "Dungy ball?" Does anyone else remember that this is the reason he left the Buccaneers? He couldn't beat the Eagles...ever.
Second, the Saints should win in probably a close game. I say probably because the Bears defense really is pretty good, but their offense, even when its good is not frightening. THEY CAN NOT RUN THE BALL! Why does no one point this out? Certainly Grossman is the story, he's awful, but one of the reasons he is awful is because somewhere around the Cardinals game the rest of the NFL realized that the Bears CAN NOT RUN THE BALL! I'm with Denny Green on this one, which does scare me. Also the Bears are 4-3 in their last seven games. The three losses were smack downs, and the most recent wins were less than inspiring. This is entirely a pick against a team, and not for one, but the Saints, who demonstrated for the whole world that the Cowboys were a joke, are about to let the world in on the Bears dirty little secret- they are an overrated team from a bad division, with an injured defense, who CAN NOT RUN THE BALL!

Finally then Pats by 10, Saints by 4. Good night now!
