Friday Night

Running Diary of Man Weekend (cont.)

3:30pm Taking a quick break from Star Wars, we’ll resume during dinner.

4:15pm Just got a fun call that said all the Little League stuff tomorrow is pushed back 3 hours. This is nice because now we don’t have to be there at 8, but also sort of lame because now I have to call everyone and tell them.

4:45pm Close game of Crushers. Calvin won a nail biter 40-37. Calvin leads the series two matches to one.

5:00pm Dinner’s On. Mac and Cheese. God bless man weekend.

7:15pm The death star just got obliterated, Han and the gang got medals, and Calvin has flipped a lid. “Dad, Star Wars is the awesomest movie ever. I just love it.” My second favorite line of the night came from Han Solo, “We just had a weapons malfunction.” Why this doesn’t go down as one of the great lines is beyond me. Especially now that “wardrobe malfunction” is part of everyone’s lexicon. Also so much stuff in the original Star Wars seems to have come true. Outside of space ships and robots, the reliance on computers and technology is bang on. Watching it again, there is almost a warning against technology in the film, sort of a call to remember simple times. Anyway, with all the stuff Lucas gets right (I think the Death Star had a USB port, and R2D2 has a flash drive) it makes me wonder a philosophical question, “How much of what happens with technology happens because its made by nerds who grew up on Star Wars?” Is the development of technology pre-planned within the technology in itself, sort of a natural determinism, or our we shaped in what we are capable of by imaginations which are shaped by something like Star Wars? Very important questions to be sure. Good article on how this works in the discipline of philosophy by a friend of mine here.

7:45pm The “men” are in bed and on their way to sleep. This means sermon writing time. Wooo Hoooo!!!!! I miss my wife.

9:35pm Just finishing up the Spurs-Jazz game and the Pacers-Magic game. Both of the teams in the west would own the two Eastern conference teams. Also if you have not seen the Spurs play this year, you are missing out. The Spurs are playing great basketball right now, watch highlights of Ginobli and Parker- both were crazy good. Duncan had like 20 points 10 boards and 5 assists, and he looked like the fourth or fifth best player on the floor for the Spurs tonight. They are very good. Good night now.

Totals are reflective of all three men:

Sermons written: .5/2

Sermons preached: 0/2

Cartoons watched: 5

Bowls of cereal eaten: 3.5

Hours slept: 3.5 (and counting)

Basketball Games Watched: 2

Diary Entries: 4

Crushers Matches: 3

i think you have uncovered a technological plot that i liken to the candy cigarettes of the cig industry and the happy meal of McD's. all we need is for some nerd to use what he has learned from lucas to destroy some civilization and we can sue.
